The Theme of the Disease in "The House of the Dead" by F.M. Dostoevsky

In the thesis, the topic of the disease was studied in “The House of the Dead” by F. M. Dostoevsky. In our study, we try to answer the question of what place the disease occupies in the artistic space and how it affects the life and worldview of the heroes. The text of "The House of the Dead", a unique work of Russian literature of the 1860s, reflecting the state of hard labor in Russia, is interesting for studying the disease and pain experienced in extreme conditions for a person - prison and exile. The big difference between the experience of the disease and other sufferings, both physical and spiritual, in prison and exile from the same experience in freedom provides the basis for considering the text from the point of view of penitentiary psychology, namely, studying the behavior model and ways of survival of the prisoner. Of particular interest are the relations of prisoners with medicine in general, as well as with the hospital and doctors in particular - in our study, an attempt is made to determine the main factors affecting the perception of medicine by the Russian “commoner” in the 1850s - 1860s.
