This work is dedicated to the problem of diversification of the economy of agricultural areas, demonstrated on the example of the Volga Federal District, which has a very large area of agricultural land and occupies one of the leading positions among macro-regions in terms of agricultural production. Meanwhile, the state of its agricultural sector is characterized by certain problems, and the standard of living in District regions is uneven and not always high. In addition, the sustainable functioning and development of rural areas of the District depend heavily on the state of agricultural sector. In these areas, agricultural activity often becomes the only employment option, which stimulates stagnation of economy and migration of population of these areas. One of the possible solutions to these problems may be diversification of the economy of agricultural regions and the development of non-agricultural activities, which determines the relevance of this study. The practical results of the work are the calculation of the diversification level of the economy of the Volga Federal District regions for the period from 2010 to 2018, an economic and statistical analysis of the relationships between the level of diversification and development indicators of these regions, as well as recommendations for improving state policy in the field of managing the economy of agricultural regions and its diversification.
