Student: Engel Natalya

Educational Programme: Fundamental and Computational Linguistics (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2020

The present study aims to analyse the linguistic aspect of the conceptual opposition “us”-“them” in Russian amateur political discourse in order to find general themes and key features of this phenomenon. There is a lot of similar discourse analyses in English, however, there is a research gap in this field based on modern Russian political discourse. This study focuses on all types of “in” and “out” groups and tries to look at trends as well as key marks, although English researches focus on language of racial and/or immigrant inclusion and exclusion specifically. The chosen platform to get text data from is Yandex.Zen. Text analysis is based on critical discourse analysis from Teun A. van Dijk’s theory of language and communication and Ruth Wodak’s described set of exclusion strategies. The study points out a set of inclusion and exclusion language markers in addition to common themes in modern amateur political discourse.
