The purpose of my thesis is to analyse in detail the two foreign policies adopted towards Iran. Through the examination of the main factors of interests in the Middle East, the incentives for the intervention, the goals and their evolution over time, I will define the type of conduct engaged and the justification of this behaviour, in order to be able to define following a realistic approach the nature of the bilateral relations. The different relations emerging from the analysis - the confrontation between US and Iran due to the American hegemony and consequent perception of Iran as dangerous threat for the support to terrorist organisations and the nuclear program from one side, and the non-cooperation related to the non-priority of Iran in Russian agenda from the other side – led me to the comparison of the two policies, aimed at understanding whether, despite different interests and goals, a match in regards to Iran can be achieved. The convergent point results to be the nuclear issue, with the JCPOA, agreement that sees for the first time the two great powers on the same side, giving hope for successful future agreements.
