Lexical Embodiment of the Cult of Saints in Ancient Chronicles

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 7

Year of Graduation: 2020

The graduation paper is devoted to lexical means and "literary" techniques, with which the chronicler tried to hint at the sanctity of the Prince. There are a number of pre-Mongol princes and Mongol invasion era who are still revered by the Russian Orthodox Church, some of whom were canonized not in the early ancient Russian period, but several centuries later. However, there is reason to believe that in the XI–XII centuries there was a wider circle of Rurikovich, revered locally, evidence of the cult of which was lost. In this work, we have tried to understand, based on the analysis of chronicle texts, and in particular the princely panegyrics, which of the Russian princes the chroniclers considered as candidates for subsequent Church glorification. Among the panegyrics to pious princes, we identified Christian virtues that could be thought of by the chronicler as hints of sanctity, and compiled a list of princes who, based on the actual chronicle data, could be perceived as potential candidates for canonization. In addition, we have identified a number of princes who were gracefully likened to Boris and Gleb and were thus thought of as saints.
