Reception of Short Stories "The Abyss" and "In the Fog" by L.N. Andreev

The work is devoted to the reception of two stories "The Abyss" and" In the fog" by Leonid Andreev, which caused a heated discussion in the press in 1902-1903. Based on the analysis of the structure of the literary field at the turn of the century, as well as the reputation of the writer, an attempt is made to restore the historical and literary context of the appearance of two stories. The restoration of the reception chain based on the ideological and aesthetic connection of the two stories in the reader's mind. The paper managed to display a changing picture of the Leonid Andreev's reputation, as well as to determine what meaning, and why, was assigned to the stories by the reader of the beginning of the XX century.
