This dissertation consists of three parts. The first part provides a brief overview of how the basics of discrete mathematics are covered in existing educational and methodological complexes, as well as in popular manuals and online resources for high school students and applicants. The second part is devoted to the comparative analysis of discrete-mathematical and algebraic approaches to solving problems on the example of exam tasks and some other activities. The third part discusses the role of inequalities, including Cauchy and Bernoulli ones, in the discussion of a number of exam problems (in particular, economic ones). The overall goal of the paper is to discuss how different circumstances (the level of preparation and motivation of students, their strengths and weaknesses, the amount of time allocated) can be emphasized and prioritized when teaching the same tasks.
