Student: Bakurova Olga

Supervisor: Andrian Vlakhov

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: Russian as a Foreign Language in Cross-Linguistic and Cross-Cultural Perspective (Master)

Final Grade: 7

Year of Graduation: 2020

The work analyzes the judgements reflecting values in the media discourse, namely the references of social identity, reflecting the Russian linguistic culture, through the prism of self-identification and identification of the Other according to two models. In accordance with this distinction, there are several views on determining other’s identity: tolerance, which involves the use of politically correct references to describe a social group; and rejection of the values of a representative of a social group expressed via hate speech. The vocabulary denoting ethnicity, sexual orientation, political beliefs and health issues was analyzed. The work is based on the analysis of excerpts from the newspaper corps of the Russian National Corpus and a sociolinguistic survey among 751 people.
