This dissertation is devoted to the study of the preservation and development of the national culture of Mari in the context of globalization processes. At present, the problem of ethno-cultural development remains one of the most important, as it is the cause of many disputes and conflicts between different ethnic groups. By analyzing the stories of residents of the Republic and experts in the field of national policy, two main levels of cultural preservation were identified – local and regional. On the basis of transcripts of in-depth individual interviews, the features of cultural policy in the region and the preservation of traditional practices by residents at the household level were revealed. This study is one of the first steps towards studying the features of cultural preservation, which can become a useful empirical base for further research on this and related topics
