One of the main challenges of modern Russia is the development of small and medium-sized cities, the creation of the attractiveness of these territories. According to scientists, education is the very trigger that can contribute to the rapid development of such territories, especially in single-industry towns with a strong influence of city-forming enterprises that can become a place for the formation of educational and labor strategies for both local graduates and attract professionals from other regions. In this paper, we go beyond the understanding of the "educational environment" in the context of an educational institution and consider the broader concepts of "urban educational environment" and "educational ecosystem", move the issue of the formation of educational strategies outside the school into the urban space. We study the educational environment of Vyksa and, based on the study of educational and labor strategies of students in grades 9-11, we bring out a project idea to expand the educational environment of a monotown.
