Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy during the third presidential term has been arguably characterized by the increased great-power assertiveness. The present work explores how Putin’s official foreign policy discourse on Ukraine and Syria draws on gendered constructions of national identity to legitimize foreign policy. In doing so, the present work uses gender-sensitive critical discourse analysis. Our findings suggest that a particular set of masculinities that are perceived in modern Russian society as hegemonic are projected internationally by the means of the discursive construction of Russian masculine great power identity. In the process of defining the national Self, the US is Othered as exhibiting subordinate hypermasculinity while Ukraine and Syria are feminized.
