Educational Programme: Data Journalism (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2021

The study is a journalism investigation based on open data and assesses cancer care in Russia: the average waiting time for a bed, the number of oncologists, the cost of treatment in private oncological clinics in Russia, as well as the execution of the state budget allocated within the framework of the federal project «Fight against cancer». The study revealed: - lack of beds, which leads to a long waiting time for treatment (about 1 month, during which the disease can progress); - shortage of oncologists (there are 15 patients per 1 doctor per month instead of the prescribed 9); - the high cost of paid treatment, which is 14% -25% of the average salary in the regions; - dishonest execution of the budget by the regions for the purchase of equipment and the construction of medical institutions. The results obtained lead to the achievement of the research goal and confirmation of the hypothesis: based on open data, it is possible to conduct a data journalistic investigation and create a longread on the topic of cancer care in Russia. This is evidenced by the project, implemented in HTML, with the text of the investigation, supplemented by visualizations.
