The Historical Memory about the Afghan War as a Factor in the Formation of Modern Russian Foreign Policy Discourse about Policy towards Afghanistan and Syria

The Afghan War 1979-1989 lead to heavy losses among Soviet population and left a great mark on history. This paper devoted to the analysis of the role of the historical memory about the Afghan War towards to the formation of modern Russian foreign policy discourse about Afghanistan and Syria in 2000-2018. Despite the large number of comprehensive studies on historical memory, there is no academic literature on the historical memory towards the Afghan War. Through constructivist paradigm of international affairs and critical discourse-analysis, the author studies specifics of historical memory towards this event on the examples of address by the President V.V. Putin and teaching materials on Russian history of XX century. In conclusion of this paper, the author finding of the influence of this phenomenon on the formation of Russian foreign policy discourse towards Afghanistan and Syria.
