The English legal philosopher John Austin (1790-1859) for several centuries continues to be one of the most influential and controversial figures in the theory and philosophy of law. In Russian jurisprudence, he is known primarily as the founder of the theory of legal positivism. In the Anglo-American world, he is often called "the father of English jurisprudence", "the founder of the analytical legal tradition" and "the creator of the first scientific jurisprudence". Austin's political and legal doctrine has more than once served as a starting point in the construction of fundamental legal theories. Contemporary British literature emphasizes the enduring value of his works, the depth and persuasiveness of his analysis of many legal and political concepts. The work carried out a comprehensive study of the political and legal heritage of Austin. The history of the formation of the views of Austin is revealed, the political and legal doctrine of Austin is reconstructed, the role of Austin's jurisprudence in the analytical legal tradition is explained and evaluated.
