This paper explores the theory of liberal education as it applies to research and "mass" university types. The main purpose of the paper is to assess the prospects for the implementation of the liberal education model in research and "mass universities" based on the analysis of the fundamental goals of higher education. The author considers the origins and development of Humboldtian and Newmanian concepts of university education, as well as analyzes the history of the emergence and transformation of the Liberal arts model. The final part of the thesis identifies the possible consequences of the digital transformation of universities.
