Moscow 2021 Abstract Previous research indicates that cinema allusions have an enormous impact on the audience. This year, however, the research has the following goal: to illustrate the differences and similarities of application of the intertextual figures such as a cinema allusion in Russian and English media discourses. Based on the analysis of 23 mass media articles taken from various sections, we examined the features of cinema allusions. Such criteria as the author’s intention, text formation function, explicitness and implicitness turned out to be culturally dependent. Special emphasis should be placed on the characteristics of realization of author’s intention. The performance of this parameter mirrors the current state of the society under consideration. In addition, the research explored the growing tendency of intromission of English-language culture into the Russian-language media discourse. Overall, the findings support the prediction that some cultures are more prone to losing their cultural identity.
