Educational Programme: Fashion (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2021

Sustainable art is a modern art movement that is right now going on the rise due to exacerbation of the climate crisis issues. As a related concept to fashion, it is seen by the author as a possible source of useful ideas that might help the latter to overcome its ongoing troubles. This study investigates the key features of sustainable art and distinguishes the specific techniques and ideas that its adherents exploit. Particularly, the author is looking at the subject being interested in applying those methods to the fashion design process in order to find some new ways to create in this area. The aim of the project is to create a fashion collection based on the main principles of sustainable art. The diploma project consists of two parts. The first one in the form of visual research observes the artworks made in this field from 2000 to 2020, explores the philosophy behind them and groups them into several categories according to the unveiled principles and techniques. The findings of the research explain the conjunction of the main notion of the sustainable art — anti-anthropocentric view of the world — with the specific artistic methods. The second part of the project gives an assumption on how they can be adopted in fashion design through the experiments with fabrics, recycling techniques, silhouettes and prototypes leading to the final collection of clothes.
