Study of Pagan Customs of Eastern Europe.

Educational Programme: Design (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2021

This project is a research of contemporary pagan culture in Eastern Europe. Mass Slavic paganism in Russia disappeared around the XIII-XIVth centuries, so a modern inhabitant of a metropolis has only theoretical knowledge about the traditions of the pagans. However, in Lithuania, even among young people, it is often possible to find an interest in ascetic communal life; one of these communities lives in a village near Vilnius. The aim of my project is to document their everyday life and culture and present the outcome in the form of an exhibition and a photo book. Thus, the main method of my work is documentary photography, but the photographer in this study is not just an observer, but also an active participant in the processes of community life. The expected result is the creation of an art project, one might say a manual, giving comprehensive information about modern Slavic paganism, awakening interest in the traditions of the past. To better understand how visual storytelling works in this topic, and use them as references, I have carried out a visual research and analysis of projects of photographers from all over the world in a similar field - hermetism.
