Emotions and their Linguistic Representation in English Literature (XIX-XX c.)

The analysis of emotions in fictional texts can be useful for better understanding of actual emotions. To convey emotions vividly and believably, the authors use various means of their representations. This work is dedicated to the analysis of these means. The first chapter is dedicated to the concept of text emotiveness and the polystatus of this concept, that is, the expression of emotiveness at all language levels, from the phonemic to the textual level. The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of representation of the emotion of fear in the following British novels: “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens, “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte, “1984” by George Orwell and “Hatter’s Castle” by Archibald Cronin. To represent the emotion of fear, the following methods are considered: direct and indirect verbalization, the use of metaphorical models, simile and repetition.
