Since ancient times, humans have interacted with animals to satisfy their own needs. Because of the ability of animals to experience various feelings and emotions, the need for humans to treat them appropriately, in particular during scientific experiments, has become increasingly relevant. This study explores the various legal aspects of the treatment of laboratory animals: the main international trends in animal welfare and protection are identified and the proper legal status of animals is determined. Based on bioethical principles of treatment of laboratory animals, a system of legal regulation of these relations in the Russian Federation is proposed, taking into account the specifics of individual fields of research.
