The media played an important role as the “referee for credibility and legitimacy” of other states soft power effort, yet research to the role played by the media in this case has been severely lacking in Southeast Asia and the BRI. Yet, understanding this is important if we are to understand the future of the BRI, with already signs in the literature showing that negative perception of the BRI affecting the execution of BRI programs in many BRI participating states, including Indonesia. We discovered that Indonesian online media perception of the BRI varied between the years, with increases in visibility in the 2019 presidential election, but also with worsened perception of the BRI. 2020 with the Covid pandemic however, showed a reduction in both visibility and favorability of the BRI.
