Representation of women in literature has always been an interesting reflection of society. This research highlights the ways women were portrayed in 20th century American literature, focusing on Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Mailer’s An American Dream. The two novels have something in common and yet are very different, the latter written forty years later. Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis is used in this research to analyze the representation of women in the mentioned books. The researcher also compares how the portrayal changed throughout the 20th century. The practical part of this research is the perception of contemporary students of literature about the portrayal of women in American literature in the 20th century.
