The Salary Beauty Premium: Evidence from Data of Tutors

Many factors influence employee remuneration in the labor market. Level of education, work experience and field of activity are quite common. A growing literature documents, articles reveal more ambiguous parameters that can affect the level of income. One of the recently discovered phenomena is the existence of an appearance premia. In this study the hypothesis about the influence of attractiveness on the amount of income in the Russian market of tutoring services was tested. This profession involves the need for regular interpersonal communication. The data contains information on 4,910 questionnaires of teachers and was collected from a specialized site for hiring tutors. Attractiveness was assessed using the facial symmetry coefficient. The salary premium for attractiveness was found only for women, and no nonlinear relationships were found. Thus, women can generate additional income through their appearance in case of attractiveness.
