This research paper analyzes the pattern of linguistic representation of the concept “American Dream”, the history of the concept and its impact on the culture and national identity. By linguistic representation are meant literary devices, which emphasize the role of the concept in the book. Especial attention is paid to the period of the Great Depression, as one of the most important events in American history which significantly impacted the culture and ideology of the country, and its representation in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also, this research paper studies the concept of American dream as a fundamental philosophy of American culture, which is based on equal rights for everyone irrespective of their ethnic origin, religious beliefs or social status. This concept, which was created by James Truslow Adams, characterizes the whole nation and their belief that if a person works hard enough, they will certainly achieve success. Prevailing methods used in this research are concept analysis and stylistic analysis. The results will outline the characteristics of the concept “American dream” both in reality and in the novel “The Great Gatsby”.
