In the middle of the Irish Sea, separated from the big world, there is the island of Rún. People who live there speak Irish, guard their children from changelings and fear the strong wind that brings the souls of the dead. The island is surrounded by magic hills, where daoine sídhe live. The daoine sídhe are fallen angels who were exiled from heaven to Ireland and then cursed by the church. One day, the Dublin priest Taig arrives on the island of Rún on a mission. He builds a temple, teaches the islanders to read and write and tries to fight the dense superstitions prevailing on the island. Then, one of the main characters of these superstitions comes to listen to Taig's sermon. It's a young síd named Soul. Affected by the sermon, Soul decides to get into Heaven. In this novel Soul and Taig will have to make friends, separate the wheat from the chaff, learn how far the mercy of God extends and help Irish people in the impending revolution.
