The dilemma of claiming whether the modern English language is evolving or deteriorating in terms of unavoidable modifications dictated by technological development and the emergence of new tools of communication has always been indispensable. According to previous findings, the question of whether present modifications of language be considered as evolution or deterioration is widely discussed among many researchers. Yet, there is no unilateral approach to this issue, as there are numerous factors to be taken considered. By specifying and examining the modifications of the English language in the world of online communication and the attitudes of the young generation towards these changes, it becomes evident that the point of view varies depending on their occupation and background. In the present empirical research, 90 students enrolled in different educational programs are sharing their experience of online communication and their opinions on whether new trends in the English language can be considered as a positive or negative phenomenon. The results obtained demonstrated a positive correlation of participants’ patterns of responses with their particular occupation. The present findings can prove relevant for further research in the areas of linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics. Keywords: the English language, sociolinguistics, online communication, instant messaging, modifications of language, occupation
