Sapir-Whorf hypothesis states that the way we speak determines, or, at least, influences the way we think. The latter, more moderate, statement is approved by numerous scholars, such as L. Boroditsky. If this is true, then all linguistic categories, including gender, may have an effect on native speakers. For instance, the native speakers of Russian and Spanish, as well as of many other European languages, proved to attribute certain stereotypically male or female qualities to words in accordance with their grammatical gender. However, a major difference between these two languages and English is that is does not have a category of grammatical gender in the current stage of its development. The given research aims to find out whether English speakers show the same tendency in associating certain words/phenomena/concepts with a particular (male or female) gender. To either prove or dismiss this statement, primary data will be collected with the help of an online survey. The respondents will be divided into two major age groups so that there was an opportunity to compare the results. The results will then be analyzed and visualized to reveal any tendencies concerning the subject matter.
