Student: Zverev Artem

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2021

Odesskie rasskazi by Isaac Babel have been criticized by contemporaries for "Romanticization of the banditry", low motifs and anti-bolshevik themes, but despite this fact, his work was very popular among the public. At the same time, the texts of this author are very complex in terms of their organization and language. This thesis study attempts to consider all the existing film adaptations of Odesskie rasskazi in a historical and literary context, analyzing the films in direct connection with the original texts, cultural trends and the reputation of the author at different times. As a result, the anticipated findings of this study will serve as a basis for further analysis of the interpretations of Isaac Babel's texts outside the literary context as well as complement the topic of the appearance and reinterpretation of classical texts of Russian literature in the popular culture of the 20th and 21st centuries.
