Boccaccio's "De Mulieribus Claris": A Translation with Commentary

Student: Andreeva Elina

Supervisor: Roman Shmarakov

Faculty: School of Arts and Humanities

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2021

The outlined project is the first Russian translation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s De mulierubus claris. The book is the first European compilation of women’s (mostly gentile) biographies that inherits the tradition of men’s or mixed biographies descending to Cornelius Nepos. The translation is accompanied with some commentaries that are related to Boccaccio’s sources, historical context, and etymology or wordplay. It is also accompanied with the detailed introductory article, as there have been almost no other separate academic works dedicated to this book. There, the important questions for further research are raised, such as the target audience and the real purpose of Boccaccio. This article also provides information about the editorial history of the book, its historical context, and its specifics. The outlined work also gives material for further studies in intermediality, intertextuality and gender studies.
