Drawing on video fragments and footages of five performances of The Meyerhold Theatre Center and Teatr.doc, this research studies the way of functioning of the visual images in the theatre space of the modern social theatre. Theatres were usually studied in two different fields of research: theatre historiography and performance analysis. Both of them are close to the theme of this work, but they also have disadvantages. The first one focuses on the reconstruction of past performances from an epistemological point of view, thus disregarding the aesthetic experience of the event. Performance analysis, on the contrary, is centred on the examination of the event, which can be experienced. This approach makes it possible to study the specifics of the particular performance without having to deepen within the historical context. The detailed study of these two approaches enables not only to define four fundamentals of the theatre: the author, the director, the actor and the spectator, - but, moreover, develop the third approach to study specifically modern social theatres.
