This paper is aimed to explore parental strategies of choosing primary school for their children. The main idea, which inspired the topic, is the idea of social status reproduction via education. Connection of cultural (educational) capital with others has been widely discussed, as well as the differences in choice behavior of families from different social classes. Here with the help of quantitative (statistics from the survey results) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) methods the question of parental choice strategies is not only explored in detail, but also certain factors are defined, which may influence this choice behavior. Moreover, this paper is aimed to unfold some cases, which may not fit in the general pattern, by examining interview data. The data is collected in 2016-2018 (the survey) and 2015–2018, 2020-2021 (interviews) by the Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science in Higher School of Economics, SPb or with their help; the sample consists of parents of children from primary schools in Saint-Petersburg.
