Performance as a genre of art is especially ambiguous in the context of conveying the semantic load to the modern viewer. Communication between the artist and the audience has many mechanisms and aspects of development in this context, which can be observed in various domestic and foreign examples. The relevance of the research topic lies in the fact that performance as a genre of art is especially ambiguous in the context of conveying the semantic load to the modern viewer. Despite the fact that at the moment there are many topical universal themes that resonate with almost any audience, artists reveal various controversial topics that cause a certain public outcry. The research was carried out in two stages: in-depth interviews with performance artists and a survey of the target audience of Russian performance art in a wider sample. The results of the study demonstrate the key features of communication between artists and spectators in the context of performance as a genre and highlight the features of perception and awareness, including, in part, national ones. The text examines various patterns that characterize performance as an attempt to find a way to overcome the socio-cultural atomization of large urbanized spaces.
