Scotland in John Buchan's Work

Student: Litvishkina Alena

Supervisor: Elena Ostrovskaya

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2021

This work is dedicated to the literary legacy of John Buchan in the 1920s and, in particular, his novel "Witch Wood", essays "The Great Montrose", "The Literature of Tweeddale", "Sir Walter Scott ", and "Certain Poets", as well as his anthology of Scottish poetry "The Northern Muse". Using these texts and the biography of the writer, an attempt is made to reconstruct Buchan's theory of the role and place of Scotland, including the Scottish canon, on the political and cultural map of Europe. From the comparison of Buchan's political views, his ideological statements and their creative implementation, it becomes clear that Buchan's role as a theorist and ideologist of Scottish literature is overlaid with his imperialist view of Scotland as an integral part of the British Empire.
