This paper presents a study of approaches to foreign languages teaching from the point of view of their effectiveness and in order to form the student’s linguistic personality. As a result of the analysis of such approaches as grammar-translation, natural, direct, communicative and lexical, it was concluded that the lexical approach is the most appropriate to the challenges of the time and the goals of language education at the present stage. This work focuses on the study of a lexical approach to learning. A hypothesis is put forward that it is the most effective method in the development of a mature linguistic personality, that is, the ability to freely and successfully communicate in a foreign language and have sufficient motivation for further self-improvement. The analysis of modern educational and methodological complexes for teaching English to adults made it possible to determine the fundamental principles of building a model of teaching a foreign language based on the lexical approach. The paper proposes a basic learning model that will effectively work on the development of fluent speech. Also, examples of exercises based on this model, which can be used in the practice of teaching students of non-linguistic specialties, are proposed.
