Formation of the Iconography of the New Testament Cycle in the Monuments of the Ottonian Renaissance — the History of the Issue

This research paper is devoted to the iconography of the Ottonian New Testament cycles. The purpose of this study is to highlight the experience of searching for protographs for the New Testament cycles, as well as an attempt to find the most relevant and adequate opinions on the question of these prototypes’ origin. The author sets himself the following tasks: the historical context of the origin of prototypes, Italy and Byzantium, the problem of the pattern and copy in early medieval art on the example of Carolingian art, the principles of selecting subjects and general iconographic characteristics of the Ottonian, Carolingian and Byzantine New Testament cycles, as well as a detailed analysis of the origins of iconography several separate scenes from the Christological cycle. In the course of the research, an analysis of the iconography of particular scenes from New Testament cycle was carried out. The authors examined sources associated with three traditions that researchers suggest influenced on the iconography of Ottonian art – Early Christian, Carolingian, and Byzantine. The main result of this research is the existing in historiography theory that the iconography of the Ottonian New Testament cycles is the result of the influence of three traditions: Early Christian, Carolingian and Byzantine. Although it is impossible to determine the degree of influence of each of these traditions, an analysis of the monuments of each of them explains the peculiarities of the iconography of Ottonian art.
