Subsequent search misses (SSM) effect is the decrease in accuracy of second target detection after finding the first target in visual search task. The general purpose of this study is to empirically evaluate the role of the attentional template in SSM effect occurrence for stimuli with different perceptual complexity: Arabic numerals and real world objects. Two types of templates were used - the verbal title of the target category and the morphed averaged image of an object from a category. Two experiments were carried out: with perceptually simpler (Arabic numerals) and more complex (real world objects) stimuli. Participants’ task was to search for the targets among distractors in both experiments. The results are discussed in the context of combined (mixed) theory of the SSM.
