Differences at the Level of Academic Success Depending on Personal and Intellectual Characteristics

Academic performance is a subject of research that is primarily associated with cognitive ability. However, scholars also find other noncognitive predictors of academic success. The focus is primarily on motivation, goal setting, learning strategies, and personality traits. Emotional intelligence has also been of recent interest. This study examined differences between students with different levels of academic achievement and personality and intelligence traits. A total of 199 students from NIU HSE, OP "Psychology" took part in the study. It was found that more successful students had higher measures of intelligence, conscientiousness, extraversion, and openness to experience. Correlations within groups were also analyzed. It was observed that students, in order to achieve higher results, tended to apply compensatory functions. Key words: academic performance, personality traits, emotional intelligence, intelligence.
