The work analyzes the interaction of the most popular sport in the world - football and politics in Russia throughout its history in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Considering and generalizing specific cases of how football balances between sports and politics, the work answers the question of how much political power in the Soviet Union controlled and in modern Russia controls this sport and how it is used by it as a political tool. The text is an attempt to work in the field of sports history, discipline, which is not developed in the Russian historiography, what determines the scientific relevance of the work. The conclusion is that despite the apparent departure of sports from politics in the modern world, football in Russia today still works according to the Soviet system, which is a certain reflection of the life of the entire
