Hip-hop is one of the most popular mass cultures in the world today, however, this movement was born as a subculture. This study examines the evolution of hip-hop culture in the Russian context, aimed at studying the dance community and its perception of hip-hop culture in modern realities. The local and global aspects present in hip-hop dance culture today are explored through interviews with sixteen hip-hop dancers. Hip-hop culture itself is viewed through the prism of subculture theories, as well as cultural scenes and life styles. As a result of the study, the difference in the perception of Russian hip-hop culture by informants is revealed, which causes conflict within the community. Dance hip-hop culture is characterized by heterogeneity, a combination of global and local features, as well as blurred boundaries and a complex structure.
