Automatic ProDrop detection in Russian texts

Student: Grillandi Andrea

Educational Programme: Computational Linguistics (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2021

The topic of ProDrop (pronominal elision) has been addressed extensively in academic literature, especially by generativists. However, the topic has not received enough attention in computational linguistics. While grammatical constraints regarding ProDrop are rather straightforward in languages like English, or Italian, they are not as clear in Russian. For this reason, a series of technologies , e.g. writing assistance tools, could benefit by research on the matter. This work examines a hand-written algorithm and a set of classifiers for detection of errors in pronominal elision, and concludes that they are not performing enough; in a future research, the problem should be addressed with neural approaches, rather than hand-applied methods.
