The aim of this work is to provide a detailed, versatile description of the meanings and features of two Russian NP-based time adverbials: 'v techenie' and 'na protiajenii' (during), as well as to identify contexts in which those synonymous constructions are not interchangeable. We analyzed the meaning and frequency of the constructions in different time periods, highlighted some previously unconsidered features of these constructions, and also considered the most typical mistakes that foreign students make in them. To do so, we used data from the Russian National Corpus (НКРЯ), the Russian Learner Corpus (RLC), as well as the Sketch Engine and Google Books Ngram Viewer. In order to better understand the position of the constructions among the structures with semantics of simultaneity from the typological point of view, and also to highlight possible meanings that may pose challenges for foreign students, we depicted a semantic map of nominal adverbial structures with the meaning of time and marked the spheres of prepositions in Russian and English that are relevant to us. In addition, as part of the work, a number of experiments were carried out, which made it possible to outline the boundaries of the possible uses of the constructions with 'v techenie' and 'na protiajenii' in modern Russian, as well as to identify some patterns indicating differences in the use and meaning of structures with both prepositions.
