In the modern media space, the correct perception of the text plays a significant role, which, in turn, is provided by the necessary general background of knowledge. The communicative background is integrated into the general structure of the communication context, which includes everything that stands behind its verbal part. Most modern texts have certain linguistic-media properties, and the language of the media is that code, with the help of which a picture of the surrounding world is formed in the individual and mass consciousness. Thanks to journalistic discourse, we can trace the connection between samples of literary language and colloquial style. There is also a tendency for journalism to approach the spoken language, which allows us to talk about the reflection of the most modern linguistic phenomena in it. Paronyms also play an important role in this type of text. Their skillful implementation allows to create a memorable image, give speech special emotional and expressive shades, and also serve as a means of humor, irony, and satire. In accordance with this, the work defines and identifies cognitive mechanisms in the use of paronyms in modern journalistic discourse.
