Year of Graduation: 2021

This study presents a description of comparative constructions in the Abaza language, a polysynthetic language of theNorthwest Caucasian family. Abaza has a special syntactic construction to express comparison of inequality. The standard of comparison is introduced by a dedicated postposition, while the parameter is modified by dedicated comparative particles. However, the Abaza comparative constructions have functional specifics which makes them different from many other languages. For example, the comparative particle is not obligatory, and the parameter can be modified with an adverbial 'very'. Similar features are found in some other languages, the relevant data of which provided a typological context for the study.
