Dal’ svobodnogo romana is the only literary work by Boris Ivanov published in 1959. It represents a continuation and supplement of Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse Eugene Onegin (1833) and is generally treated as its untypical interpretation. Unlike other interpretations Ivanov has chosen a prosaic form of a narration, and attempted to combine the scientific approach and fiction in his novel. Moreover, Ivanov intended not only to interpret Pushkin's novel, but also to complete it and supplement with historical references and details. Even though Ivanov’s text can bring some new perspectives to the perception of Eugene Onegin (1833), it was never thoroughly examined. The overall goal of this work is to analyse the specificity of Ivanov's novel and its inclusion in the general context of Pushkin’s novel interpretations. In addition, the work analyses the internal structure of the novel. It is assumed that the commentary given by Ivanov on certain points in the novel Eugene Onegin (1833) predetermines well-known and generally accepted scientific works. To thoroughly investigate this hypothesis the comparative analyses of commentaries of Ivanov, Lotman, Nabokov and Brodsky will be conducted. The obtained results can be used as basic information about the book as a whole, since no work has been found on the detailed study of the book.
