The Genre Originality of the Series of Novels "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin

“A song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin is attracting considerable interest due to its worldwide popularity. A significant number of studies aims to discuss female characters and medievalism in the series of novels. There is a lack of studies that consider the peculiarity of the genre of “A Song of Ice and Fire”. The study aims to determine the elements of different genres that the examined series of the novel consists of. The analysis of the novels was conducted, based on the works on the theory of genre, according to which the originality of genre had been concluded. The study reveals that there is a significant influence of gothic literature, horror, detective literature and ancient epic that were reproduced in “A Song of Ice and Fire”. The research demonstrates that the novel written by George R.R. Martin is more sophisticated in the sense of a genre than a regular fantasy novel. The series of novels contains a unique genre attribute in each storyline as well as the other general features.
