Development Trajectories and Barriers to Inclusion in “High-spending” Hobbies on the Example of Sailing

In this paper, sailing is considered as a form of "serious" leisure. Due to the growing attention to the study of wealthy social groups, forms of leisure as a way of reproducing their social status, as well as the growing interest in public discussion in relation to sailing, the purpose of the study was formulated - to study the trajectories of development in high-income hobbies on the example of sailing. As part of the study, an analysis of the current discussion about high-spending hobbies was carried out. In the theoretical part of the work, approaches to determining the symbolic meaning of leisure practices, lifestyle, as well as the functioning of "fields" were highlighted. As part of the empirical part of the study, an analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews with representatives of such a highly divergent hobby as sailing was carried out. In the work, the motives, and "barriers" of entering the hobby were studied, the analysis of the meanings invested in sailing was carried out, the characteristics of the "field" of yachtsmen were presented and the main trajectories of development in sailing were highlighted.
