Branding of the High-Altitude Skating Rink Medeo

Student: Orli Abildayeva

Supervisor:

Faculty: Faculty of Creative Industries

Educational Programme: Design (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2024

The Medeo High-Altitude Skating Rink’s branding serves as the thesis’s central concept. A skating rink called “Medeo” is situated 1961 meters above sea level close to Almaty. Constructed in the USSR, it remains operational as a state monument featuring significant Republican urban planning and architecture. Yet, neither as a tourist destination nor as a place of historical significance, Medeo lacks a distinctive visual language that would highlight the skating rink from a different angle. Thus, rather of just being a “faceless Soviet monument” where people come to skate on weekends, residents and visitors alike will be able to appreciate Medeo as a sort of novel, autonomous object because of the visual history that it has never had.
