HSE Scholars to Join Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences

The Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences has officially begun its work in China. It brings together research centres in mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, and Earth sciences, with participation from HSE University scholars. During the launch conference, the Sino-Russian Mathematics Series project was also presented; it envisages the publication of 100 textbooks and monographs over the next ten years. HSE University representatives Ivan Arzhantsev and Sergei Lando have joined the project’s editorial board.
From January 29 to February 1, 2026, the Russia–China Conference on Fundamental Sciences took place in the city of Sanya at the Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City research and innovation hub. HSE University researchers participated in the event. During the conference, the launch of the Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences was officially announced.
The conference focused on interdisciplinary research. The programme included plenary lectures on current issues in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and other natural sciences, a visit to the International Centre for Mathematics and Physics in Sanya, and strategic sessions on the development of scientific cooperation. Presentations by leading experts from Russia and China explored the potential for joint research between the two countries.
HSE University was represented at the conference by Prof. Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science; Prof. Sergei Lando, Academic Supervisor of the Faculty of Mathematics; Prof. Andrey Vasenko of the School of Electronic Engineering at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (HSE MIEM); Prof. Alexey Shaitan of the Big Data and Information Retrieval School at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science; Vladimir Ulyanov, Leading Research Fellow at the International Laboratory of Stochastic Algorithms and High-Dimensional Inference; Prof. Vladimir Bogachev of the Faculty of Mathematics; and Prof. Konstantin Arutyunov of the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM.
Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University and academician, presented Ivan Arzhantsev with an honorary diploma from the Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Research. The Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science was the only representative of HSE University among the five Russian scholars to receive such a diploma.

The conference also marked the launch of the Sino-Russian Mathematics Series project, which aims to publish 100 high-quality textbooks and monographs over the next ten years. The editorial board includes nine Russian and twelve Chinese scholars. Among the Russian representatives are Profs Ivan Arzhantsev and Sergei Lando.
‘It is a great honour for me to be among the representatives of the Russian mathematical community at such a significant forum. The conference in Sanya clearly demonstrates how the centuries-old traditions of fundamental science in Russia and China, when brought together, create a synergy for the future. The launch of the Sino-Russian Mathematics Series is not merely a publishing initiative; it is a strategic bridge between scientific schools designed for decades ahead. Such initiatives lay a solid foundation for breakthrough discoveries that emerge at the intersection of disciplines and cultures. I am confident that this marks the beginning of a new stage of fruitful cooperation in which mathematics serves as a universal language of progress,’ noted Ivan Arzhantsev.
‘This is recognition of the scientific achievements of our scholars and of HSE University’s growing authority within the international academic community. Participation in the editorial board of a series that has strategic importance for the development of mathematical science in Russia and China opens up new opportunities for our students and faculty in terms of access to cutting-edge research and joint publications,’ emphasised Sergei Lando.
The participation of HSE University researchers in international-level scientific activity confirms the university’s status as a leading Russian and global centre for the development of mathematics, computer science, and the natural sciences.

HSE Scientists Uncover Mechanism Behind Placental Lipid Metabolism Disorders in Preeclampsia
Scientists at HSE University have discovered that in preeclampsia—one of the most severe complications of pregnancy—the placenta remodels its lipid metabolism, reducing its own cholesterol synthesis while increasing cholesterol transfer to the foetus. This compensatory mechanism helps sustain foetal nutrition but accelerates placental deterioration and may lead to preterm birth. The study findings have been published in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences.

In her interview with the HSE News Service, she spoke on her research topic, how object-centric process mining lets data reflect reality, and her overall experience of studying at HSE University.
How the Brain Processes a Word: HSE Researchers Compare Reading Routes in Adults and Children
Researchers from the HSE Center for Language and Brain used magnetoencephalography to study how the brains of adults and children respond to words during reading. They showed that in children the brain takes longer to process words that are frequently used in everyday speech, while rare words and pseudowords are processed in the same way—slowly and in parts. With age, the system is reorganised: high-frequency words shift to a fast route, whereas new letter combinations are still analysed slowly. The study was published in the journal Psychophysiology.
