HSE Hosts International Symposium for Indonesian Students
The 10th International Symposium of Overseas Indonesian Students Association Alliance (OISAA) will take place from July 23–26 at HSE’s Moscow campus. The event has brought together opinion leaders, experts and students from Russia and Southeast Asia to discuss the role of young Indonesians in the development of Indonesia in the fields of education, culture, tourism and healthcare.
The official opening on July 23 was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador for the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, Mr. Wahid Supriyadi, HSE’s Vice Rector, Ivan Prostakov, and representatives from educational centres in Indonesia and Russia. The students taking part in the symposium represent over 50 associations for Indonesian students studying abroad, including Europe, the USA and Asia.
The Symposium, organized by the Association for Indonesian Students in Russia (PERMIRA) on behalf of the Overseas Indonesian Students Association Alliance, is in its tenth year. In 2018, HSE has the honour of hosting the event and it was attended by Vice Rector, Ivan Prostakov. He warmly welcomed meeting participants to Moscow and impressed on them the importance of building new skills in order to be successful in today’s world. The Vice Rector provided the audience with insight into HSE’s teaching and extensive research activities which aim to create and dispatch cutting-edge knowledge. He explained how HSE has evolved from an economics university since its founding 25 years ago to become one of Russia’s leading tertiary education institutions in a wide range of fields.
HSE and Indonesia
HSE has signed agreements with three Indonesian universities: Catholic Atma Jaya University of Indonesia, London School of Public Relations and Universitas Padjadjaran. In the 2017-2018 academic year, 26 students from Indonesia were enrolled in various programmes at HSE. Indonesian students wishing to apply to HSE can access further information on Facebook and Instagram.
‘We offer many exchange programmes and tuition-free options for our international students, many of whom come from Indonesia,’ said the Vice Rector. ‘HSE provides opportunities for students to undertake full degree programmes in English, as well as short-term programmes such as the Summer University.’
The Indonesian Ambassador for the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, Mr. Wahid Supriyadi, officially opened the Symposium with a ceremonial gong. He expressed his excitement at seeing so many students from Indonesia in attendance. ‘Russia will no doubt be a major destination for Indonesian students in the future’, he said, and explained that HSE University is a major drawcard for the country.
The OISAA Symposium will run for four days and will include panel discussions and key note speeches on topics such as Creative Economy and Tourism, Education, Acceleration of Regional Development and Public Health. There will also be a vote for the new President of the OISAA and the council members for 2018-2019. On the final day, symposium participants will be able to enjoy some cultural experiences, including Indonesian music and food.
The symposium is a fitting lead-up to HSE International Partners’ Week, which will take place from 15th till 19th of October. HSE Vice Rector, Ivan Prostakov, warmly invited representatives from the university’s many partner institutions to attend.
HSE is actively expanding cooperation with Southeast Asia. The OISAA Symposium follows a visit by a delegation from Vietnam’s National Economics University to HSE on July 2 and 3, where both institutions signed an agreement outlining areas for future cooperation, including academic exchange programmes for students and faculty staff, joint educational and research programmes, and joint scientific and cultural events. HSE now has cooperation agreements with three Vietnamese universities. With HSE’s ever-increasing visibility in Southeast Asia, collaboration will no doubt continue to evolve.

MIEM and HSE Design School Meet with Indonesian Game Dev Representatives
In December, the Indie Go space hosted a meeting with representatives of Indonesia’s game development industry. Colleagues from the ‘Game Engineering and Interactive Systems’ workshop of the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM) and the HSE Art and Design School learned about the intricacies of the Indonesian game industry and told the visitors about their own projects.
HSE University Opens Educational Hub in APAC
On November 7, a representative office of HSE University opened in Indonesia. It is a new educational hub for students from the Asia-Pacific (APAC) who are planning to study in Russia, as well as for other Russian universities looking to establish ties with Indonesia. The representative office is based at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in the city of Surabaya. Its operations are supervised by the HSE University campus in St Petersburg.
