Evgeny Yasin Turns 85

On May 7, 2019, HSE Academic Supervisor Evgeny Yasin celebrates his birthday.

Dr. Yasin once said that as a child, he dreamed of becoming a ‘strong man who was attractive to women and who had a good, interesting job—but he had no idea what that would be’. This is a surprising confession by someone whose name has now come to be synonymous not only with HSE University, but Russian economics in general.

A surprising, yet edifying one. It turns out that it is important not to get hung up on something and be open to new knowledge and ideas. Evgeny Yasin’s example might be useful for those who are thinking about applying to university, particularly to master’s programmes—after all, it was a degree in economics that the future academic advisor of HSE would go on to pursue, after earning his first degree in engineering.

We won’t go into all of Dr. Yasin’s biographical milestones in detail. Lots of people at HSE know about his work at the Academy of Sciences or as Minister for the Economy.

‘I wanted our country to implement reforms that would lead to a more effective, functional economy,’ Dr. Yasin says of his public service experience. The question about the success of such reforms implemented by Dr. Yasin, his peers and followers, is controversial. But even today, under difficult international conditions and despite the gloomy predictions, the Russian economy is demonstrating a stable course.

The same can be said of HSE University. In just 25 years, a university, which was initially founded as a master’s programme institution, has become one of Russia’s biggest universities, now offering education even in physics, chemistry and biology. The April Conference, another brain child of Yasin’s, turned 20 this year. And Maxim Oreshkin, Minister of Economic Development of Russia, is an HSE alumnus.

‘I wish for my fellow citizens to see the best in the story of their lives’, wrote Evgeny Yasin on one of his blogs.

Dear Evgeny Grigorievich, we wish you many great things to come in the story of your life!

A grand session of the Academic Council dedicated to HSE Academic Supervisor Evgeny Yasin on the occasion of his birthday will be held on May 17 at 3 pm.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev sent congratulatory telegrams to Evgeny Yasin.
